Youth

Youth & Teens

The following classes and activities are oriented specifically for youth and teens, aged 5-18.

 Youth Aquatics (6-15 years old)

All levels contain water and boating safety skills, synchronized and rescue skills. All strokes in the developing stages are listed as alternating, symmetrical and / or rudimentary. Further stroke refinement occurs at each succeeding level. Both age and skill ability will be evaluated in grouping participants.

Polliwog: Paddle stroke on front, back and side. Child must be able to swim length of pool (25 yards) unassisted before moving on to Guppy level. Online Registration Available

Guppy: Front, back and side alternating stroke, front and back symmetrical stroke, and rotary breathing. Child me be able to swim one length of pool (25 yards) using rotary breathing with each stroke unassisted before moving on to the Minnow level. Online Registration Available

Minnow: Rudimentary front crawl, breaststroke, side stroke, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Child must be able to swim 1 length of the pool (25 yards) with each of the above strokes before moving on to the fish level. Online Registration Available

Fish: Refinement and increased with front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Child must be able to swim 2 lengths of the pool (50 yards) of each stroke with correct mechanics and using open turns where appropriate. Butterfly Stroke introduced. Online Registration Available

Flying Fish: Further refinement and increased endurance of Fish level strokes. Child must be able to swim 100 yards of front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, back crawl and elementary backstroke with refined mechanics, and butterfly stroke for 50 yards with fins and 25 yards without fins. Online Registration Available

Shark: Competitive starts and turns with front crawl, breaststroke, back crawl and butterfly, 200 yard IM, and 50 yards of inverted breaststroke, over arm side stroke and trudgen crawl. Online Registration Available

Swim Team (Y Members Only)
A competitive swim program for those who are able to swim at least one length of the pool. YMCA philosophy of fun and fairness strictly adhered to throughout the swim season that runs October 1 through mid March. In addition to swimming skills, participants develop self-esteem, confidence, time management skills, regard for others, and much more. Fees payable directly to the YMCA of Kewanee.

  

Tumbling/Trampoline 

All classes at the Glen Andris Tumbling and Trampoline Center allow participants to advance at their own pace and develop self-esteem while perfecting tumbling and trampoline skills. Our program uses a nationally will work on progressive technique development. Strength, endurance and coordination come naturally as children progress through the program. Classes are arranged by age and ability level.  Fees per 7 week session.

Pre-Rec (ages 6-8 years) 90 minute class
Includes both tumbling and trampoline

Rec Kids (ages 6-8 years) 60 minute class
Tumbling and trampoline - 1 event  - choose either

Rec Kids Combo (ages 8 & up) 2 hour class
Includes both tumbling and trampoline in one class. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Home School Tumbling/Trampoline (ages 6 & up) 90 Minutes
Designed especially for home schooled kids, includes fitness, coordination, and social time.

Cheerleading (ages 11 & up) 90 minute class
Designed to enhance cheerleading skills, tumbling, jumping, stunting. May pay per class to work around cheer schedules. 

Boys' Sport Prep (ages 5-7) 60 minute class
Class for boys only, includes tumbling and trampoline skills to build strength, coordination, and all around conditioning in preparation for future sports.

Flip-Tops Tumbling and Trampoline Team
A competitive team program for the more serious athlete who wishes to compete and progress faster in the sport. Flip-Tops attend local, state, regional, national, and world competitions through the USA Gymnastics (USAG) trampoline and tumbling competitive system. A yearly team fee of $66 is required for USAG membership and insurance. Class fees per 7 week session.

Super Stars (ages 5-7 years) 90 minute class
Must progress from Super Tots program by instructor's permission.

Future Stars Pre-Team (USAG membership optional)
Must progress from Super Stars by instructor's permission. Includes one 2 hour class per week and occasional Saturday events.

Dance

Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop (ages 5 years old & up) 60 minute class
Dance...Dance...Dance....Dance education provides opportunities for body awareness, alignment, physical expressions and creativity. The dance student will learn a progression of techniques and terminology through tap, jazz, ballet and hip hop. Classes are offered in combinations. Classes are held Tuesday afternoon / evenings. A recital will be held in the spring. Dance is a continuous program: classes remain the same Fall 1 through Spring 2 sessions.

Sports

Youth Basketball (K-4th, boys & girls)
Grades 1-4 will form teams, have 30 minutes of instruction / 30 minutes of games

Grades 1-2  9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

Kindergarten will be instructional only 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Winter Session Starts: January 10   /  Spring Session Starts: February 28 / Online Registration Offered

Youth Fundamental Basketball (grades 4th-6th, boys & girls)
This will be all instruction of basketball fundamentals, learned through drills, hand on and through playing games. No league is formed.  Meets twice a week. Winter Session Starts: January 5  /  Spring Session Starts: February 23 / Online Registration Offered

NEW!!! Indoor Soccer(grades 1st - 6th, boys & girls)
Children grades 1st - 6th will form teams of 4 for a 3-on-3 soccer league with one substitute. Two 20 minute halves with a 5 minute half time. Clock will be continuous with 1 minute timeout per half.  Starts January 11th / Online Registration Offered

Dodgeball (pick-up games)
Grades 3rd through 6th can come into the YMCA small gym from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and play pick-up games of dodgeball. All games will be regulated by the YMCA Building Supervisor on duty.  Free to youth members!!!.

Youth Floor Hockey League (grades 1st - 4th, boys & girls)
Children come to learn the fundamentals and rules of floor hockey. Great sport to have you your children socializing with other children. Meets twice a week.  Starts: January 6th / Online Registration Offered
